Top 10 Sliver Stocks To Invest In 2014

AP, John Amis Walmart is once again undercutting Apple (AAPL) on its own phone, slashing the price of the new iPhone 5c to $45 -- less than half the $99 suggested retail price. The iPhone 5s and 5c came out on Sept. 20, and at the time Walmart (WMT) surprised everyone by selling the phones at below-market prices of $189 and $79, respectively. Now, just two weeks after that launch, the price on the downmarket 5c is coming down even more. The move appears to come in response to rival Best Buy (BBY), which on Thursday announced that it was taking the price of the phone down to $50. In a statement, Walmart spokesperson Sarah McKinney said that "providing our customers low prices on the newest technology is what we do." She did, however, acknowledge Best Buy's own price cut, and said that "As a price leader, we are always looking for ways to surprise our customers with low prices and disrupt the competition." Besides beating Best Buy's price by $5, Walmart has another advantage: Its pricing is good at least through the end of the holiday season, while Best Buy's pricing is only good through Oct. 7. Walmart also has an active trade-in program that lets you apply the value of your old phone to your purchase. Walmart isn't the only retailer responding to Best Buy's big price cut: RadioShack (RSH) also announced Friday that it will discount the phone to $50, a price that will be good through Nov. 2. Still, with so many retailers suddenly discounting the 5c, we wouldn't be surprised if it became the standard pricing for the phone going forward. Regardless, one thing is clear: For now, the Apple Store is not the best place to buy this iPhone. Stop texting and start saving! Yes, your smartphone can save you money – from coupons to comparing prices to making a shopping list, these seven smartphone apps are the key to making sure you don’t go over your budget. And they’re all free!

Brookdale Senior Living Inc.(BKD) has agreed to merge with Emeritus Corp.(ESC) in a deal that values the operator of long-term, assisted-living facilities at about $1.4 billion, as the companies look to form a national senior-living-solutions company. Emeritus surged 34% to $28.75 premarket.

  • [By Sean Williams]

One company with seemingly limitless upside potential today was senior housing operator Emeritus (NYSE: ESC  ) , which gained 35.2% after agreeing to be purchased by Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD  ) for $1.4 billion, excluding debt. Under the terms of the deal, Emeritus shareholders will receive 0.95 shares of Brookdale, and would effectively own 23% of the outstanding shares of the company once the merger is complete. Brookdale anticipates the deal being EPS neutral in 2014, and forecasts it adding $0.40 in EPS by the third year. The move certainly makes sense on paper, as cost synergies will help these two senior housing companies fight back against the expectation of declining Medicare reimbursement rates. However, over the long run, the Medicare reimbursement picture is still very cloudy, making Brookdale a riskier buy at the moment following today's announcement.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt Thalman]

One of the Dow's biggest losers of the day was United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) , which fell 2.16% this afternoon. The move came after news broke indicating that United Tech's Pratt & Whitney division and Rolls-Royce were abandoning their possible joint venture plan. The two companies had previously discussed the idea of joining forces to build the next generation engine that would be used in both Airbus aircraft and Boeing planes. The venture would have given the companies essentially a monopoly on the engine market for narrow-body planes, which is what the two organizations realized, and why they ultimately decided not to move forward with the plan.

    Major profits ahead
With a price tag of $52 billion, the KC tanker contract is one of the Pentagon's largest weapons initiatives. Further, some analysts estimate that with future parts and maintenance, the contract worth could climb to $100 billion. This is great news for Boeing, but it's also great news for its subcontractors on the project -- Honeywell International (NYSE: HON  ) is supplying the auxiliary power unit and cabin pressure control unit, Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) is supplying Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures, United Technologies' (NYSE: UTX  ) subsidiary Pratt & Whitney is supplying the engines, Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL  ) is supplying the integrated display system, and Raytheonis supplying the digital radar-warning receiver. All in all, this is a major initiative for defense contractors, and good news for Boeing is good news for all.

Advisors' Opinion:

With this in mind, I feel it'd be prudent of biotech-savvy investors to give Oncolytics Biotech (NASDAQ: ONCY  ) a closer look.

    The big risks
I'm quite aware that there are a lot factors that'd raise a red flag with Oncolytics. Similar to Affymax, you could say that Oncolytics has put all of its eggs in one basket with its lead experimental drug, reolysin. According to Oncolytics' website, including its U.K., Canadian, and U.S. studies, reolysin as either a monotherapy or combination therapy is the basis for all 31 clinical trials! Obviously, if reolysin proves ineffective or unsafe, Oncolytics is going to be a world of hurt.

T-VEC is not your traditional biologic drug. It is actually a bioengineered form of the herpes virus that, once injected into cancerous tumors, replicates, and produces an immune-stimulating protein that puts a bulls eye on cancer cells throughout the body. Despite its promise and intriguing mechanism of action, T-VEC is not in further development at Amgen. However, Oncolytics (NASDAQ: ONCY  ) has shown promising results for its bioengineered form of reovirus called Reolysin. Initial phase 3 results showed that 86% of patients taking the drug had reduced tumor mass or growth after six weeks of treatment.
