Top 5 Managed Healthcare Companies For 2014

GIC Pte, manager of more than $100 billion of Singapore reserves, said China slowdown and credit crunch will affect global investments even as the fund plans to maintain its holdings in the nation.

t systemically important,GIC Chief Economist Leslie Teo said in an interview yesterday, calling the nation a ey driver for global markets. It will affect global equities, including private equity. It will also affect emerging-market equities.

China ruling Politburo this week pledged to stabilize growth while pressing on with economic reforms to ensure the country meets a target of expanding at a 7.5 percent pace this year, a goal that could be under threat after a second straight quarterly slowdown. Authorities also want to counter mounting debt risks, with policy makers ordering an audit of government borrowings this month and engineering a money-market cash squeeze in June to encourage banks to better manage liquidity.

The nation benchmark Shanghai Composite Index (SHCOMP), which doubled in 10 months through August 2009 as the government poured $652 billion of stimulus into building roads, railways and housing, has tumbled about 43 percent earlier this week from its high, destroying $748 billion in market value.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Rudolph Technologies (Nasdaq: RTEC  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Rudolph Technologies doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 17.6%, and inventory increased 32.2%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue dropped 8.9%, and inventory grew 32.2%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks worrisome. Revenue dropped 23.3%, and inventory grew 10.8%.

In case you are wondering, I only made peanuts on what should have been a monumental success. You see I never sold a share of Camtek until the autumn of 2008. I exchanged them for shares in their arch rivals Orbitech (OBRK) and Rudolph (RTEC) which had become large net/net propositions (more on those purchases of ORBK and RTEC later in the series).

Don't understand that sentence? Would you like to? For $499, you can buy the Rosetta Stone Spanish software package (or a 36-month subscription to Rosetta Stone's (RST) online language training tools), and learn how to translate it. According to the company, its products are: "Proven to work. Guaranteed." But what if you don't have $499 to invest in learning a new language? Or what if you'd just like to learn Spanish for free? (Or Danish, Dutch, French, German, Irish, Italian or Portuguese, for that matter?) Well, you're in luck. Turns out, there's an app for that. Introducing Duolingo The 2013 Apple iPhone app of the year, Duolingo's self-titled online software program offers English speakers free lessons in each of the above eight languages. (It also offers native speakers of 20 foreign languages a free path to learning English as a second language). More astounding, this free software program may be more effective at teaching a user a language than America's best four-year private colleges -- which can charge as much as $242 per credit hour for the privilege. A 2012 study conducted by professors from the City University of New York and the University of South Carolina found that persons using Duolingo "with no knowledge of Spanish ... will need on average 34 hours ... of study with Duolingo in order to cover the material for the first college semester." In contrast, with a traditional college semester lasting 14 or more weeks, at three hours' of classroom time per week (language lab time would be extra) a college language class involves a minimum of 42 hours' study. That works out to a math problem that even liberal arts students should be able to grasp. If the professors' data is right, a course of study with Duolingo would be 19 percent more effective than college study -- but cost as much as $726 less for a semester's worth of learning. How'd They Do That? Started by the same man who invented the CAPTCHA system used by Internet sites, Carnegie Me

Best Valued Stocks To Own For 2014

The argument I've made for some time with BRF S.A. (Nasdaq: BRFS) is that this company is on a long-term plan to transform itself from a commodity- and export-driven protein company into a global branded food company like Kraft (Nasdaq:KRFT) or Nestle (Nasdaq:NSRGY). With that, I not only expect significant growth, but significant margin and free cash flow expansion over the next decade. BRF S.A. is by no means cheap according to conventional metrics, but the shares are still slightly undervalued on a cash flow basis and offer investors good exposure to emerging market consumer spending growth.

Q2 A Little Light On Sales, But Strong On Margins
BRF S.A. came in just slightly (1%) below average sales growth expectations, with 10% growth for the second quarter. Growth was driven by the company's large export business (up 19%), as domestic sales (up 4%) were weighed down by a weak demand environment across the Brazilian food sector.

With a better mix (more processed foods) and improving export conditions, BRF S.A. saw significantly better margins this quarter. Gross margin improved about three points from the year-ago period, beating the average estimate by almost a point and a half. Operating income jumped 79% on a huge improvement in export margins, while EBITDA rose 49% and the company logged an almost three-point margin improvement.

Advisors' Opinion:

For example, Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) saw record first-quarter revenue of $7 billion. Declining rig counts and pricing pressures in North America were still more than offset by the company's international operations. Meanwhile,Schlumberger's (NYSE: SLB  ) results seemed to mirror National Oilwell Varco's in that its revenue was up over the year-ago quarter but slipped sequentially. Again, though, the story here was strength internationally with weakness in North America. Further, both companies are very optimistic about the future and neither see any signs of a business slowdown.

Admittedly, Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) is partnering with Saudi Aramco in production efforts in the Partitioned Zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. And oil-field services and technology kingpin Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) has planted major facilities in the country. But it seems that a more widespread use of western companies' capabilities could do wonders for Saudi reserves and production longevity.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Markos Kaminis]

Whether the stock is overvalued or not do! es not matter at this point, because an impact to its subscriber base due to the data sharing news would probably change market expectations for the company's operations and affect both earnings estimates and valuation multiples. It would probably drive the shares lower in my view, and I see no reason to risk that by holding the stock. Long-term holders, of course, have tax considerations to consider, and the news is still filing out. If Verizon's peers are also implicated clearly, perhaps with the aid of a Verizon PR push, this issue would be effectively mitigated. Though even in that case, there could be market share loss by all major American firms, with companies like T-Mobile US (TMUS) and Virgin Media (VMED) benefiting, whether they have also been involved or not. In any event, for new stakeholders, or those willing to deal with tax implications; or for those interested in a potential short opportunity, I would sell the stock today. I see no reason to bear risk while this issue and its implications are still unraveling, and while VZ has thus far not been significantly discounted for it.

Hot International Companies To Own For 2014

Banks and financial sector firms are still held in low repute by public opinion in many countries. Taxpayers and retail investors along with average citizens still distrust stock markets, high frequency trading and resent their banks, brokers and insurance firms due to their heavy losses and bailouts since 2008's crises.

Now, as financial firms seek to restore confidence and trust, a new series of indictments are brought by Jeremy Leggett in The Energy of Nations: Risk Blindness and the Road to Renaissance. Leggett is a former oil executive, geologist, founder of the successful Solarcentury company and its charity SolarAid, and chair of the influential financial think tank Carbon Tracker. Leggett, also a celebrity in his native Britain, contributes to the Financial Times, The Guardian, and is a Fellow at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute.

Leggett, as an insider, sat in many British parliamentary meetings, the World Economic Forum, as well as multiple meetings of the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Bank of England and other high-level, closed-door financial meetings on the 2008 crises and continuing aftermath. So Leggett's evidence for his indictments of banks, institutional investors, hedge funds, private equity and VCs are documented in detail - many from his firsthand observations. His further indictments beyond the risk-taking that helped cause the 2008 financial meltdown are against these same short-term financial players together with their long-time clientele of incumbent energy sector companies (utilities, coal, nuclear, petroleum, gas, pipelines, transmission) and compliant bureaucrats and politicians.

  • [By Chris Damas]

The Q1 2015 earnings report for automotive, audio and consumer accessory distributor VOXX International Corp (NASDAQ: VOXX), a potential peer or performance benchmark of Harman International Industries Inc (NYSE: HAR), Skullcandy Inc (NASDAQ: SKUL) and Turtle Beach Corp (NASDAQ: HEAR), is due out after the market closes on Thursday. Aside from the VOXX International Corp earnings report, it should be said that Harman International Industries Inc reported Q3 2014 earnings on May 1st (they beat expectationsand raised their forecast on strong European automotive demand) and will report Q4 2014 earnings on August 7th; Skullcandy Inc reported Q1 2014 earnings on May 1st and will report Q2 2014 near the end of this month; and Turtle Beach Corp reported Q1 2014 earnings on May 12th. However, VOXX International Corp last earnings report was a train wreck that led to several analyst downgrades.

  • [By John Udovich]

Yesterday after the market closed, small cap audio stock Skullcandy Inc (NASDAQ: SKUL) reported earnings and began rising in after hours trading, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with the performance of other audio stocks like mid cap Harman International Industries Inc (NYSE: HAR) and small caps Koss Corporation (NASDAQ: KOSS) and Parametric Sound Corp (NASDAQ: PAMT). I should mention that inlate 2012, Skullcandy had the dubious distinction of being the market most shorted stock (see: Long Live the Shorts or the Short Squeeze? SKUL, AM & UBNT) with shortinterest of 86.47% and there would still be a lot of shorts out there who might start feeling the squeeze (Note: SKUL is at least no longer on the HighShortInterest.com list)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Back on August 29th, I had the unfortunate job of explaining that the Digital Ally, Inc. (NASDAQ:DGLY) rally had likely run most - if not all - of its course, and DGLY shares were poised to move lower..... soon, and a lot. It wasn't a particularly popular idea to float to the investing public, many of whom had just purchased Digital Ally on the way up, in the wake of the St. Louis riots. That social unrest put the spotlight on the need for security tools like the ones supplied by DGLY, and once thrust into the limelight, the sky was the limit with new-found notoriety. Anyone who even suggested the stock could do anything but go up from there was clearly a lunatic.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

There's no denying Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been one of year's top investment stories, with shares running up from less than $40 to more than $194 in just a few short months. But, as one might imagine, that 385% runup from TSLA creates something of a disconnect between the company and its share price. Time to head for the exit. Instead, a better use of that now-considerably-greater capital is a position in Digital Ally, Inc. (NASDAQ:DGLY) ... a stock that's also had a pretty good 2014, but has suffered more than a small setback since mid-September. Specifically, DGLY has pulled back from a peak price of $17.47 to a low of $9.88 as of Friday. But, it looks like that correction may have already come to an end.

  • [By Jayson Derrick]

Digital Ally (NASDAQ: DGLY) said that a police department in Tennessee placed an order for the company's wearable cameras, in-car systems, motorcycle video systems and VuLink connectivity devices. Shares gained 8.79 percent, closing at $12.50.

All mREITs are taking it on the chin
The agency crew, led by heavy hitters Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) , American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) , and Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) , have all been close to hitting 52-week lows, but the blood-letting hasn't stopped there. Even hybrid mortgage REITs, which also buy some non-agency paper, have plunged, as well. Two Harbors (NYSE: TWO  ) , which enjoyed such a nice lift post-earnings about a month ago, recently sunk to new lows, and Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE: IVR  ) has also slipped, even after its CIO's recent show of faith, making a sizable insider purchaseof stock less than two weeks ago.

  • [By Sean Williams]

In contrast, non-agency mREITs often have to be more careful with their leverage since loan defaults actively impact their bottom-line profit, and rapidly rising interest rates, such as what we saw over the past few weeks, can trigger MBS and other security sales at a loss. In return for more risk, non-agency securities pay out higher yields. Take, for example, Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE: IVR  ) , a buyer of agency and non-agency RMBSes, which delivered what might seem like an uninspiring 1.64% net interest margin in the first quarter with a leverage ratio of 6.4. Now compare that to agency-only mREIT Annaly Capital, whose net interest margin fell 80 basis points from the year-ago period in the first quarter to just 0.91%, but with a higher leverage ratio of 6.6.

    Invesco Mortgage Capital (IVR)

President and CEO of Invesco Richard King reported a rather notable insider buy on Aug. 5. The CEO purchased 6,500 shares of company stock at an average price of $15.41 per share. This purchase cost King a total of $100,165. Since this buy, the share price has increased a minor 0.13%. King now holds on to at least 56,545 shares of Invesco Mortgage stock.

    Analysts at odds over mREITs
Financial analysts have been busy noting the underperformance of mREITs lately, especially since the Fed dropped the QE3 taper bombshell almost two weeks ago -- immediately igniting fears of rising interest rates, which would decrease the value of the trusts' legacy assets, thus dinging book values. The pain hasn't been limited to the stocks mentioned above, as CYS Investments (NYSE: CYS  ) , and even hybrids like Invesco (NYSE: IVR  ) , have been on a roller-coaster ride ever since.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] is trading around book value your next step is to figure out how book value is calculated.

The reason a company trading below book value is interesting has to do with accounting. In the U.S., you don mark up the book value of land and many other potentially valuable assets just because you have evidence like an appraisal, comparable sale, etc. that the market value is now higher than your original cost.

So, there will be situations where knowing how a company accounts for its assets and knowing the stock trades for less than book value can help direct you to companies selling for less than they are worth.

DreamWorks is a movie studio. So it is using a rather subjective estimate of the ultimate revenue a movie will produce. It is then amortizing the cost of the movie as revenue comes in to the company in proportion to the percentage of revenue this represents relative to expected total revenue the movie will produce.

For very old movies, it actually a little different. And for flops it different. DreamWorks can write off flops. And it can expect the ultimate revenue for a movie to be higher to the extent such revenue comes more than 10 years after the film release.

In other words, DreamWorks has to fully amortize a movie within 10 years and disregard the value an 11-year-old movie might have.

This is explained in a note to the company 10-K. It is very important for Ben Graham-type investors to read all these notes carefully but especially the notes on depreciation and amortization:

Once a film, television special/series or live performance is released, capitalized productions costs are amortized and participations and residual costs are accrued on an individual title basis in the proportion that the revenue during the period for each title (urrent Revenue bears to the estimated remaining total revenue to be recognized from all sources for each title (ltimate Revenue.
