Citigroup said on Friday that it discovered fraudulent loans in its Mexico subsidiary and that its employees may have been in on the crime.Writing down the loans will reduce the bank’s 2013 net income by $235 million, bringing the previously reported total to $13.91 billion, the bank said in a statement.Citigroup said it believes at this point that the incident was an isolated episode. The bad loans were made to Oceanografia SA de CV, a Mexican oil services company that is a contractor for the nation’s state-owned oil company, Pemex. Oceanografia is in the middle of a corruption probe in Mexico.Oceanografia borrowed from Citigroup’s Mexican unit, Banco Nacional de Mexico or Banamex, using expected payments from Pemex as collateral.Banamex discovered in a recent review that Oceanografia appeared to have falsified invoices to Pemex that were collateral for loans, Citigroup Chief Executive Michael Corbat said in a separate memo to employees. The bank wrote down about $400 million of loans backed by the bogus invoices.

What a difference a mega-order makes! Recently, I discussed Embraer's (NYSE: ERJ ) disappointing first quarter in light of its long-term prospects. At the time, I put forward that if Embraer could add another $1 billion-$2 billion in orders to its backlog, a missing puzzle piece would fall into place, making this company a persuasive investment candidate. Last week's announcement of a significant order from regional airline SkyWest, (NASDAQ: SKYW ) , provides a $4.1 billion jigsaw cutout to complete Embraer's picture.

SkyWest: rolling with the punches
One of the big potential victims of this switch is regional carrier SkyWest (NASDAQ: SKYW ) . Regional carriers fly regional jets and turboprops for legacy carriers, and SkyWest is the biggest player in this market. In fact, it is the largest operator of 50-seat (and smaller) regional jets in the world, with more than 500 such aircraft in service. With so much of its business tied to a disappearing market segment, it's clear that SkyWest is in a delicate situation. - [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Republic did win a big contract from AMR (NASDAQOTH: AAMRQ ) recently, but other major contracts have gone to top competitor SkyWest (NASDAQ: SKYW ) .

Alamy From a surprisingly strong retailer report to a coffee giant paying a big price for breaking a contract, here are the best and worst of the business world this week. Snapchat -- Loser If Facebook (FB) offers you a $3 billion check, do you really turn it down? Sources this week reported that Facebook offered the makers of Snapchat -- the popular app that allows users to send photos and short videos that disappear after a brief amount of time -- a whopping $3 billion buyout. Snapchat passed on the deal. Now, it's easy to reflect back several years ago when Facebook rebuffed a buyout offer for a little more than $1 billion. Some ridiculed Facebook's decision at the time, but it's a $120 billion company now. However, at least Facebook had a clear path to monetization. Snapchat may be soaring in popularity with teens sending risque snapshots, taunts, and jokes to one another, but the moment you begin slapping display ads on the product, it's will find it much harder to sustain that arc. Macy's (M) -- Winner You always want to have healthy momentum going into the telltale holiday quarter, and that's exactly what Macy's did by offering up blowout quarterly results on Wednesday. Sales at department stores open at least a year climbed 3.5 percent, and while heavy promotions were needed to woo shoppers, earnings still managed to soar 22 percent to $0.47 a share. Analysts were settling for a profit of $0.39 a share. It's unlikely that the many retailers reporting next week will be as upbeat, but for one chain at least this really was a miracle on 34th Street. Starbucks (SBUX) -- Loser Starbucks chose to break free of its retail distribution contract with Kraft Foods (KRFT) two years ago, and now the java giant's been slapped with a $2.8 billion judgment. Yes, Starbucks is good for the money, but it's still a pretty stiff price to pay for backing out of a deal. The $2.8 billion is just a little less than what Starbucks has earned over the past two years combi

When shares of old Kraft stock broke into two components last fall, most investors expected the higher-growth Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ ) global snacks business to be the more attractive segment of the two post-spinoff companies. Yet the North American grocery business that now trades as Kraft Foods Group (NASDAQ: KRFT ) has shown surprising success as an independent company, and as it's turned out, shares of the new Kraft stock have done a lot better than Mondelez during the first nine months of their separate existence. Let's take a closer look at exactly how the new Kraft has done so well and what's in store for its stock going forward.

In 1960, seven of the 10 largest American companies (by revenue) were either automakers or oil producers. The largest pure consumer-goods company, Kraft (NASDAQ: KRFT ) , made only 15% as much revenue as the largest company, General Motors (NYSE: GM ) . The list of leading companies reads like a web of automotive interconnections: automakers, parts suppliers, steelmakers, tire manufacturers, oil refiners, and paint and plastics makers. Not one of the 100 largest companies in America was a retailer.

The Global Technologies division operates in the product areas of access control systems, secure card issuance, identification technology and hotel locks. The Entrance Systems division is a supplier of entrance automation products and services. The Company subsidiaries include ASSA Sverige AB, Timelox AB and ABLOY Holdings Ltd., among others. In November 2013, it acquired Ameristar Fence Products Inc, a manufacturer of ornamental fences and gates. In January 2014, it acquired IdenTrust. In February 2014, it acquired Lumidigm. Advisors' Opinion:- [By Weighing Machine]
Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company's back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisitions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa remains an active consolidator of the locks industry - it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

A fond farewell?
Many companies have abandoned capital expenditure plans in other plays to put more money behind their Eagle Ford ventures. Reuters recently reported that Talisman Energy (NYSE: TLM ) is considering selling its 74,000-acre stake in the play, potentially looking to raise a whopping $2 billion. Given the money that companies are willing to pour into the Eagle Ford, it just might find a buyer. Talisman's joint venture with Statoil (NYSE: STO ) is targeting production of 30,000 barrels of oil equivalent by the end of this year, which would double last year's number. - [By Jesse Solomon]
